(CNN) -- Myanmar has rejected rumors that its military leader was ill and had been deposed.

At a news conference in Yangon, the capital, Minister of Information Kyaw Hsan said Senior General Than Shwe remained in good health and in charge of the country.

Rumors that Than Shwe was ill and that there had been a coup spread throughout the region last week.

The country formerly known as Burma is ruled by a military junta.

International aid groups and news reporters who have traveled to the country describe it as very repressive.

The CIA estimates that Myanmar has a population of 43 million.
