(CNN) -- A Qantas Airlines plane has made an emergency landing in Osaka, Japan, because of suspected smoke in the cargo hold, the airline said.

Nine people were injured while evacuating the plane on emergency slides.

The plane, which was carrying 178 passengers and 13 crew members, was headed from Tokyo to Perth, Australia.

It landed in Osaka just before 1 a.m. local time on Sunday (1600 GMT Saturday), after a smoke warning, according to a statement posted on Qantas' Web site.

The Osaka control tower reported smoke on landing, so an emergency evacuation was declared and the emergency slides deployed, the airline said. The aircraft was met by Japanese emergency authorities.

The nine injured passengers were taken to a hospital, Qantas said.

Video footage from the scene showed medics putting a neck brace on one woman and removing another person on a stretcher.

"Early inspections have shown no sign of smoke or fire, and Qantas believes a faulty reading from one of the cargo sensors may have caused the smoke indication," the airline statement said.

The Airbus A330 aircraft will be inspected by local authorities.

The airline said it has accommodated the passengers in Osaka while a relief aircraft is flown from Tokyo.
