Anti-U.S. protest in Jakarta
JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) -- Thousands of Indonesian Muslims marched in a well-planned and peaceful protest that concluded at the gates of the U.S. embassy in Jakarta.
Their mass-produced signs condemned alleged American desecration of Islam's Holy Koran, a charge published last week by Newsweek magazine but later retracted.
Indonesian police estimated the crowd on Sunday at less than 10,000, a number claimed by the 25 Islamic groups and political parties that organized the demonstration.
A U.S. embassy spokesman downplayed the protest saying it was expected and not unusual.
It appeared to be well organized and orderly and the marchers dispersed without incident after arriving at the embassy.
Indonesia is the world's most populous Islamic nation.
