Akayev era over in Kyrgyzstan
MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) -- The Askar Akayev era in the central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan is officially over.
The parliament of the former Soviet republic voted to accept the resignation of the ousted president, who was removed from power on March 24, according to Interfax, the Russian news agency.
Akayev -- who fled the government headquarters in Bishkek as it was stormed by protesters angry over flaws in recent parliamentary elections -- is now in Russia.
He resigned from the presidency last week, a move made official by the legislators' vote.
Parliament also set a presidential election date for July 10, Interfax said. Earlier, it had decided to hold the vote in late June.
Also Monday, the country's Supreme Court acquitted key opposition leader Felix Kulov of corruption charges, Interfax reported.
The decision gives Kulov -- who had been freed from jail during the revolt -- the opportunity to run for president. Kulov said his jailing was political.
