Search for 100 missing after Ecuador boat sinks
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS(CNN) -- Fishing vessels and cargo ships off Colombia were being alerted Wednesday to search for more than 100 people missing after their fishing boat sank, said the captain of Ecuador's port of Manta. Nine people -- two women and seven men -- were found alive Sunday on buoys and boxes, said Armando Elizalde Ycaza. Their condition was described as "acceptable," and they received first aid. The overloaded boat was carrying 113 people when it set out to sea at 10 p.m. last Thursday from Esmeraldas on Ecuador's northwest coast, Elizalde said. It sank at midnight Friday, after which naval and coast guard authorities immediately initiated a search-and-rescue plan that included air searches, he said. The coast guard vessel "May 24" was taking the rescued to the port of Manta, in southwestern Ecuador, where they were expected to arrive Wednesday afternoon, Elizalde said.
