SPECIAL REPORT

(CNN) -- CNN.com asked users to share their thoughts about the political, spiritual, economic and other global issues the next pope will face. Here is a sampling from thousands of responses, some of which have been edited:

The next pope has to be a member of the new church, coming from the region where Catholicism is a majority (Latin America) or where the church is growing faster (Africa).
Ed Munz; Caracas, Venezuela

I think that the next pope will face challenges of a secularized world, and spiritual indifference of the people. The real problem of this society and the Church is to be able to overcome the pressure of a materialist mentality. The next pope should teach with his doctrine and example that it is possible to live spiritually in this modern society, that the commandment of love is the best solution to the world.
Ji Young; Buenos Aires, Argentina

The next pope should follow the same steps that made John Paul II known around the world. In other words, the next pope must have charisma so that the Vatican's voice is able to reach all kinds of leadership and people throughout the world.
Antonio Carlos de Noronha Miranda; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

I think the next pope should find out why so many Latin American Catholics are leaving the church for other Christian groups. The Roman Catholic church does not serve the needs of an inquiring person searching for a life closer to Jesus. They find it in groups such as Jehovas Witnesses, Mormons, and evangelical Christian groups. The Roman Catholic church should ask why.
James Whitman; Guayaquil, Ecuador

The next pope will have to focus in unifying the churches. To finish the religious conflict between Muslims and Christians. I believe that the solution would be to move definitively the papacy to the Holy Grounds. Briefly, I want to say that the place of the Vatican must be in Palestine.
Dorita; Lima, Peru

I don't think John Paul II made great changes in the church or its way of thinking. He was too conservative. Didn't make very radical changes, the next pope has to focus on some issues that affect our world and start being more realistic about birth control among other things.
Juan Navarro; Caracas, Venezuela
