Attorney: Teen murder suspect's health 'sound'
![]() David Ludwig heads to an Indiana State Police plane Tuesday. YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSLANCASTER, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- An 18-year-old Pennsylvania man suspected of killing his 14-year-old girlfriend's parents before fleeing with her to Indiana is "physically sound" after the high-speed chase that netted his arrest, his attorneys said. "Over the coming days, we will strive to determine what, in fact, occurred last Sunday morning and what may have led to these tragic events," attorneys Merrill Spahn Jr. and James Gratton wrote in a statement. David Ludwig is accused of shooting his girlfriend's parents, Michael and Cathryn Borden, both 50, once each in the head at their home early Sunday. Ludwig and the girl, Kara Borden, then fled to Indiana, where they were apprehended after a high-speed chase. The girl has not been charged. He was arraigned on two counts of criminal homicide, one count of kidnapping and one count of reckless endangerment. He is being held without bail, pending a preliminary hearing, said Lancaster County District Attorney Donald Totaro. (Full story) The preliminary hearing was scheduled for next week, but his attorneys are trying to postpone it. Ludwig's attorneys said they have spoken with Ludwig and members of his family, "who are supportive." "Until four days ago, he was an 18-year-old young man, not unlike any other 18-year-old man here in Lancaster County," the lawyers said. "Currently, his condition is that he is physically sound, but understandably scared, anxious and confused." The prosecutor in the case said he's still trying to decide whether to pursue the death penalty. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the case, particularly whether the girl, who was flown home on a private jet Tuesday, was kidnapped or went with Ludwig willingly. (Read about Ludwig's arraignment) The girl's 13-year-old sister, Katelyn, told police she and her brother, David, 9, were in the house during the shootings. She told police she saw the slaying of her father before taking refuge in a bathroom. From there, she heard another shot, presumably the one that killed her mother. Her brother ran to the neighbor's house for help, police said. The sister also told police she heard Ludwig call for Kara Borden after the shootings, and they left together. Ludwig and the girl's parents had gotten into an argument early Sunday after he and the 14-year-old stayed out all night, police said. A prayer vigil was scheduled Wednesday night for the Bordens in their hometown of Lititz, Pennsylvania, about 80 miles west of Philadelphia.
