One miner dead, another missing in roof collapseFrom Helen Hernandez YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSCUMBERLAND, Kentucky (CNN) -- A roof collapse at a Kentucky coal mine killed one miner and left another missing, a state official said Thursday. Rescuers are digging through rocks in hopes of reaching the missing miner, who is believed to be trapped underneath rubble. The accident happened Wednesday night at Stillhouse Mine in Harlan County near Cumberland, said Mark York, spokesman for the Kentucky Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet. State police reported receiving a call at 2:37 a.m. Thursday. The two miners were part of a crew of about eight men who were performing a process called retreat mining in which coal pillars that support a roof are removed, an official said.
