Source: Suspect confesses to 33 D.C. area arsons
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A suspect arrested Wednesday morning in connection with the D.C. serial arson investigation has confessed to at least 33 fires that had been linked to the probe, and to some others that had not been, a senior law enforcement official told CNN.
The suspect was arrested in Prince George's County, Maryland, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said.
The suspect had been interviewed by police previously, the official said, and was linked to the fires through DNA evidence found at the scene of at least one of the fires.
The suspect lived near the sites of some of the fires in Prince George's County, and worked at a Kentucky Fried Chicken nearby, the official said.
Charges are likely to be filed in the case Wednesday afternoon at U.S. Federal District Court in Greenbelt, Maryland, the U.S. attorney's office for Maryland said.
Authorities say they believe more than 40 fires were set by the same arsonist in the District of Columbia, southern Maryland and northern Virginia.
The ATF recently offered a $100,000 reward for the capture and conviction of a suspect.
