Police search for abducted children

 Two North Carolina parents are accused of abducting their kids from a foster home.

(CNN) -- Authorities searched Sunday for two North Carolina children abducted a day earlier at gunpoint from a foster home by their biological parents, law enforcement officials said.
Police said they found the car in which the parents fled -- and with it a handgun and a rifle -- but that the father is still considered armed and dangerous.
An Amber Alert was issued for Breanna Chambers, 11 months, and her 29-month-old brother, Paul Chambers. Police said they were taken from their foster home about 9:15 a.m. by their parents, James Canter, 29, and Alishia Ann Chambers, 18.
During the abduction, Canter brandished a handgun, said Mark Shook, the sheriff of Watauga County, North Carolina.
The couple, who are not married, lost custody of their children eight months ago, after authorities raided a methamphetamine laboratory at their home, Shook said. Chambers is awaiting trial on drug charges, and Canter faces outstanding warrants and "has been avoiding arrest," Shook said.
The couple -- with the children in tow -- fled west across the state line into northeastern Tennessee, where they were pursued by police in Johnson County, Shook said.
But the officer in pursuit lost sight of the car, and when he came upon the white, two-door Mercury Cougar in a rural, mountainous area, it had been abandoned, Shook said.
The car does not appear to belong to either adult, he said.
"Apparently, they just got hold of a vehicle and had been using it," Shook said.
Canter has "extensive family" in the area, added Shook, who said FBI agents and the highway patrol are both helping with the search.
"Every lead that comes in, we've gone out on 'till it's been exhausted," he said.
Early Sunday afternoon, authorities gave up searching the area near where the car was discovered, Shook said.
"We're going back and interviewing family members to see if there's been any contact," Shook said.
In addition, relatives in Savannah, Georgia, are being interviewed, he said.
Both children have blonde hair and blue or green eyes, police said.
Breanna weighs 18 pounds, is 27 inches tall and was last seen wearing a white-flowered, long-sleeved T-shirt and green pants. Paul is 2 feet 9 inches tall, weighs 28 pounds and was wearing a white, long-sleeved T-shirt and blue overalls with an orange lining.
