(CNN) -- Chicago police are searching for a gunman who opened fire inside a nightclub, killing two people and wounding at least five others, according to a police spokesman.
A third person is hospitalized in critical condition and on life support, police said.
The violence broke out when four people, attending a private party upstairs at Cafe Allure in the city's Northside, tried to get into the club's first floor, Officer John Mirabelli said.
When they were told the club was closing, at least one of the people opened fire, shooting at least eight people.
Chicago police were dispatched to the scene around 3 a.m. Saturday (4 a.m. ET), Mirabelli said.
No one is in police custody in connection with the shooting.
The shooting victims were taken to hospitals, although Mirabelli said some individuals drove themselves to the hospital with unspecified injuries.
