LONDON, England -- It's not unusual for commuters to raise a stink about London's Underground subway system.
But now they're being told to "take a shower" to avoid unpleasant odors on the Tube.
Tim O'Toole, managing director of London Underground, is asking passengers to be considerate of others stuck in the same sweltering carriages during summer months, without the benefit of air conditioning.
"I want to assure people that I only travel by the Tube and I always take a shower," O'Toole told a London radio station.
"But other than that I would certainly hope that during these summer months when it is very, very, warm and we are pressed very close together that to the extent people can practice personal hygiene it would help us."
His comments came in response to a campaign for "considerate commuters" by radio station LBC 97.3 FM.
The greatest challenge to considerate behavior will be on the Northern line of the Tube, O'Toole said, which has been plagued by delays.
"Well, I don't like to brand any of my commuters as inconsiderate but I think it would be fair to say those who are given the greatest challenge by the asset failures pose the greatest challenge to considerate behavior and right now that would be the Northern line."
