Lethal Owen returns with hat-trick
England striker Michael Owen returned from injury in sparkling style with a hat-trick as Newcastle won 4-2 at West Ham in Saturday's Premiership clash. Owen scored in the fifth, 43rd and capped it off with the third in time added on -- and set up Alan Shearer to hit his 199th goal for the club after 66 minutes. Senegal striker Henri Camara also claimed a treble to revive the fortunes of Paul Jewell's Wigan after a run of five straight defeats at the hands of the top clubs, Camara got off the mark after nine minutes when he snapped up the rebound after Lee McCulloch's shot hit the bar. Charlton's defensive frailties were exposed after the break when Camara followed up with a shot from a Jason Roberts knockdown and a close-range finish in the 63rd minute. Back at Upton Park, Owen gave Newcastle the perfect start, but team mate Nolberto Solano, who hit last week's winner against Arsenal, followed up with an own goal, turning in Marlon Harewood's cross. The Peruvian winger made amends with a fine cross for Owen to poach his second and skipper Shearer chipped in with the third. Harewood gave West Ham hope, converting a 72nd minute penalty after a handball by Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi, but Owen sealed it with a tap-in. Bolton moved into fifth place -- trailing Tottenham on goal difference -- as Stelios Giannakopoulos scored twice, in the 75th and 80th in a 4-0 rout at Everton. Kevin Davies scored one and Gary Speed added a 79th-minute penalty to make it a bad day for the Merseysiders. Manchester City thrashed Birmingham City 4-1 in a late game in the northwest that will turn up the pressure on the visitors' manager Steve Bruce. Birmingham made a dismal start, conceding a goal to David Sommeil in the first minute and then a penalty, converted by Joey Barton. Antoine Sibierski headed home before the break and Bradley Wright-Phillips got the fourth in the 70th minute -- two minutes after coming off the bench. Czech midfielder Jiri Jarosik, on loan from Chelsea, scored Birmingham's consolation goal six minutes later, beating David James with a low shot. The final twist was a late red card for Birmingham keeper Nico Vaesen, for a handball outside the area. Fulham improved to 19 points with a 2-1 home win over Blackburn. Papa Bouba Diop scored in first-half injury time -- his 50th start for the club -- and Luis Boa Morte made it 2-0 in the 52nd. A Zat Knight's own-goal in second-half injury time gave Blackburn a late chance. Manager Harry Redknapp worked his magic with his first victory since returning to Portsmouth on the strength of Svetoslav Todorov's 56th-minute goal against West Bromwich. It was Portsmouth's first home win this season in the league.
