AMSTERDAM, Netherlands -- Utrecht's French defender David di Tommaso died of a heart attack, his club have confirmed.

Utrecht said in a statement that an autopsy had shown that the heart attack was probably caused by cardiac arrhythmia -- a condition which disturbs the heart's normal rhythm.

The 26-year-old died in his sleep at the home he shared with his wife and child on Monday night.

On Tuesday, Utrecht's club doctor said the player had not been taking any banned substances. Di Tommaso's body has now been returned to France and he would be buried at a private funeral on Saturday.

Di Tommaso, a former France under-21 international, started his career at Monaco and later played for French second division Sedan.

In July 2004, he joined Utrecht from Sedan and played 31 games last season, winning the club's player of the year award.
