Zellhofer named Rapid Vienna coach
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSVIENNA, Austria -- Austrian Champions Rapid Vienna have named Pasching's Georg Zellhofer as their coach from January on a three-year deal. He replaces Josef Hickersberger who will take over Austria's national team. Zellhofer has in the past nine years led Pasching from a minor regional league into the top division and the UEFA Cup. Pasching are currently second in the championship and Rapid fourth. Rapid revealed that Zellhofer, 45, was chosen over rivals including former international Walter Schachner. "I'm convinced Georg Zellhofer will fit very well with our team," said Rapid president Rudi Edlinger. Hickersberger was appointed national coach earlier this month to replace Hans Krankl, who was sacked following Austria's failure to qualify for next year's World Cup finals in Germany. Rapid lost 1-0 against Club Bruges 10 days ago and are yet to score a point or a goal in three Champions League matches. ![]()
