AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (Reuters) -- AZ Alkmaar's Martin van Geel will become technical director at Ajax from July, filling a vacancy left by Louis van Gaal who quit in October to coach AZ.

"I've had a wonderful time at AZ but it is a terrific challenge to work at Ajax as technical director," Van Geel said in an Ajax statement on Monday.

"I often said I did not want to leave because I liked it a lot in Alkmaar but I don't want let this chance go," he added.

Van Geel, who played for Ajax from 1979 to 1981, said coming back to the team as technical director would be a highlight in his career.

Ajax finished runners-up in the Dutch first division last season 10 points behind champions PSV Eindhoven.
