Ferguson questions Chelsea honesty

Seeing red. Ferguson is unimpressed by Chelsea's explanation of a meeting with Rio Ferdinand.

LONDON, England -- Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has launched a scathing attack on Chelsea over the 'chance' meeting in a London restaurant between the club's chief executive Peter Kenyon and United's Rio Ferdinand.

Premiership leaders Chelsea claimed Tuesday that they were not trying to sign the England central defender and that the meeting had been purely accidental, but Ferguson is skeptical.

"It may be somebody else's view the meeting was unfortunate - but it's not my view," he said.

"My concern is my supporters and I'm just letting my supporters know that I'm not happy with it. We believe Rio Ferdinand (that he did not know Kenyon was there). Whatever way he was enticed to the meeting."

"But I can't say I was over encouraged by Peter Kenyon's words that they are 'not interested' in signing Rio Ferdinand," the United chief was widely quouted in the British media on Saturday.

Ferguson added that the club were close to a agreeing new deal with the defender.

In March, the Premier League charged Chelsea and manager Jose Mourinho with making an illegal approach to Arsenal defender Ashley Cole. The player was also charged.
