Forlan included in Uruguayan squad
Forlan is hoping to be fit to face Australia despite his club's claims MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay -- Uruguay have named striker Diego Forlan in their squad for the World Cup playoff against Australia, even though his Spanish club Villareal said he was unlikely to play. Forlan was part of a 27-man squad named by coach Jorge Fossati for the games in Montevideo on Saturday and Sydney on November 16. Villarreal said last Friday that tests revealed Forlan had torn a muscle in his left leg during the 1-0 win over Benfica in the Champions League two days earlier. They said he could be sidelined for up to three weeks. Uruguayan media quoted Forlan as saying that he was confident of playing. "Fortunately, I'm not feeling any pain," he said. "I can walk normally, without problems, and everything makes me think I could be ready for Saturday's meeting." Striker Javier Chevanton, who scored five goals in the South American qualifying group, was left out following his recent row with the coach. Chevanton said he did not expect to play again while Fossati was coach and, although Fossati later said he would excuse Chevanton's comments, he did not include the player in the squad. Uruguay earned the right to a playoff by finishing fifth in the South American group. The two countries also met for a place at the 2002 finals with Uruguay winning through 3-1 on aggregate.
