Hondo files appeal to CAS over ban
![]() Hondo is appealing against his suspension for a positive dope test LONDON, England -- German rider Danilo Hondo has filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport against his two-year doping ban. The CAS said Hondo had requested they annul the decision made by the Swiss Olympic Committee last month and exonerate him from any sanctions. Hondo was sacked by the Gerolsteiner team after testing positive for the banned stimulant carphedon during March's Tour of Murcia. He had won the first two stages of the race and was second to Italy's Alessandro Petacchi in the Milan-San Remo classic on March 19. The CAS said the International Cycling Union and the World Anti-Doping Agency had also brought the case before them, requesting a harsher punishment. Cunego to returnMeanwhile, Italy's Damiano Cunego has recovered from mononucleosis earlier than expected and will return to cycling in the Brixia Tour on Friday. The 23-year-old, who won the Giro d'Italia last season and finished the year with the top UCI ranking, missed this year's Tour de France due to the virus. He was diagnosed after a lackluster performance in the Giro d'Italia in May.
