Mary-Louise Parker

(Entertainment Weekly) -- Entertainment Weekly's daily guide to notable shows:

11-11:30PM
SERIES PREMIERE: WEEDS
(Showtime) When Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker) is suddenly widowed, she raises money by selling marijuana to her neighbors. Former "SNL"-er Kevin Nealon stars as a congressman who is her best customer. Since this show is Showtime's umpteenth attempt to out-edge HBO's original programming, perhaps it should be titled "Six Feet Under the Influence."

Best of the rest

8-9PM
SERIES DEBUT: SLINGS & ARROWS
(Sundance Channel, TV-14) There are those who barely remember the '94-96 Canadian series "Due South: and those who miss it dearly. The former will dismiss "Slings" as too, well, Canadian, but the latter will be reminded of why we adored producer-star Paul Gross, who played South's sweet, restrained Mountie. In "Slings," however, Gross is neither restrained nor entirely sweet as a half-mad director of a fusty Shakespeare festival literally haunted by his past. For all Gross' mania, "Slings" is a quiet show featuring a spot-on cast (including current Hollywood It Girl Rachel McAdams). Though slogging through the tedious first episode is challenging, the rest of the series is worth the effort.

EW Grade: B+

9-10PM
SERIES DEBUT: FILTHY RICH: CATTLE DRIVE
(E!, TV-PG-SL) Jessica Simpson's dad, Joe, produces this show about spoiled celeb spawn on a ranch. You know it'll rock, because the man practically invented famous-kid pimpery.

9-10PM
FOOTBALLERS WIVE$
(BBC America, TV-MA) Don't do it, Char! Talking to the press is worse than talking to the police, because even stuff you don't say we hold against you.

9-11PM
APE TO MAN
(History Channel, TV-PG) Why argue about creationism? Obviously some of us have never evolved.

11:45PM-MIDNIGHT
HARVEY BIRDMAN
(Cartoon Network, TV-14) Harvey loses it when X gets his crest. Damn! Why didn't he go with Phyllis Diller for the block?

9-10PM
SERIES DEBUT: THE GIRLS NEXT DOOR
(E!, TV-PG-SL) Clearly Hugh Hefner and Co. aren't camera shy (see "Cribs" and "Entourage"), but are they actually interesting? "Girls" focuses on three of his lady friends, who attempt to prove they're more than arm candy -- a noble endeavor, though one that struggles to hold our attention. Like, where are those bunny fights over Hef? -- Charles Curtis

EW Grade: C

10-10:30PM
ENTOURAGE
(HBO) The boys travel to San Diego for the annual Comic-Con geekfest. And there's a very special appearance by U2, which is perfect -- Bono and the Edge should fit right in with guys with names like Drama and Turtle.
