Lemar beats Mariah Carey at MOBOs
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSLONDON, England -- British soul singer Lemar beat Mariah Carey for Best Album at this year's Music of Black Origin (MOBO) awards. The London-born star who was propelled to fame by the British TV talent show "Fame Academy" topped the honors with two trophies. As well as Best Album for "Time to Grow" he also beat Joss Stone and Estelle to UK Act of the Year. "This is so unexpected, I'm taken aback. I want to thank every single person who has supported me," Lemar told Reuters. This year was the 10th anniversary of the MOBOs which are voted for by the public. Lauryn Hill opened the show at London's Royal Albert Hall. Public Enemy were honored with an award for Outstanding Contribution to Black Music. U.S. singer-songwriter John Legend won Best R&B Act, beating Lemar and Mariah Carey. Best Reggae Act went to Damian Marley, who with his mother Rita also accepted a Posthumous Achievement Award for his father Bob Marley. Accepting the award to the warmest applause of the night, she said: "This is really great, most of all to see the legend continue. "The work continues and my sons carry it on." Damian Marley closed the show with a performance of Could You Be Loved, accompanied by brothers Julian and Stephen. Best Video was "Drop It Like It's Hot" by Snoop Dogg (ft Pharrell). Other winners included Youssou N'Dour for Best African Act, Kano for Best UK Newcomer and Tim Westwood for Best UK Radio DJ. The awards featured a tribute to Luther Vandross, who died in July.
