DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- Michael Jackson has stirred a small controversy in the United Arab Emirates by entering the ladies room in a shopping mall.

The pop star's publicist said Jackson, who arrived in Dubai this week as the guest of a champion rally driver, did not understand the Arabic sign on the door and left the bathroom as soon as he realized his mistake.

In the statement released late Tuesday, Jackson's publicist, Raymond K. Bain said: "Upon his exit (from the ladies bathroom), he was recognized and a crowd ensued. He had to wait in a nearby bookstore until police arrived to escort him through the crowd."

But local newspapers reported that the 47-year-old performer did not quickly leave the bathroom and was spotted applying makeup before leaving.

Jackson's host, the Emirates champion rally driver Mohammed bin Sulayem, dismissed the story as rumor.

"People are always interested in gossip and in portraying a negative image of (Jackson)," bin Sulayem told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "The reality is that he's an easy person to be with, not demanding and not difficult."

Bin Sulayem said Jackson was considering buying property in Dubai. This week's visit is his second after a stay in August.

"He likes the place and we want him to stay for good here. He likes what he saw and we should try to convince him to buy," he said.

Though it has been reported that Jackson has purchased acreage on Bahrain's Amwaj Islands, his publicist has denied it.

Since his June acquittal on child molestation charges, Jackson has made several trips to Bahrain as a guest of Sheik Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the son of Bahrain's king.

McCartneys host gala

BEVERLY HILLS, California (AP) -- A child is killed by a land mine every 18 minutes, guests were told at the fifth annual Adopt-a-Minefield benefit gala hosted by Paul McCartney and his wife, Heather Mills McCartney.

On Tuesday, the McCartneys hosted about 1,000 guests, who dined on a vegan dinner and were entertained by special musical performances by Paul McCartney and singing legend Tony Bennett. A silent auction took place as cocktails were served, followed by dinner and a live auction led by talk show host Jay Leno, who served as the master of ceremonies.

Governments should "listen to the voice of the people" and sign a treaty banning the deadly devices, Paul McCartney told AP Television News on the arrivals line for Tuesday night's event at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

"People don't like land mines, especially the survivors and the people who are living in the countries with them," McCartney said. "They think they are cowardly, like we do, so I think it's down to the governments to actually just listen to the people and sign the treaty and get rid of all these things and there would be an end to it."

Adopt-a-Minefield, a leader in addressing the pervasive global problem, holds the annual benefit to raise money for mine clearance and landmine-survivor assistance.

Other guests included actors Pam Anderson, Alex Baldwin and Andy Garcia.

Heather Mills McCartney said 135 countries have signed the Mine Ban Treaty, but the U.S., Russia and China have not.

"We've cleared 21 million meters of square land at Adopt-A-Minefield," she said. "It only takes $30 to make a child walk again, so you can make a difference."

'Seinfeld' cast on 'Regis and Kelly'

NEW YORK (AP) -- Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa will host the four stars of "Seinfeld" for the entire hour of "Live With Regis and Kelly" on Nov. 23.

It will be the first time that "Live" has devoted a full program to the cast of another show, Buena Vista Television announced Monday.

Philbin is "the world's biggest 'Seinfeld' fan," according to the release.

Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander and Michael Richards will talk about the release of the DVDs "Seinfeld -- Season 5" and "Seinfeld -- Season 6," which will be in stores November 22.

"Seinfeld" ran on NBC from 1990-98.

'Julie Andrews Day' in Chicago

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Mary Poppins dropped by City Hall.

Julie Andrews, who won an Oscar for her title role in the 1964 film, is in Chicago with the national tour of the musical comedy "The Boy Friend."

Mayor Richard Daley proclaimed Tuesday "Julie Andrews Day" in the city, calling the 70-year-old actress-singer an "entertainment legend."

"I love your city, and I'm very proud to bring our show to your theater and hope to come back many, many times," Andrews said.

She is directing this version of "The Boy Friend," which is scheduled to run through Saturday at the Chicago Theatre. But in 1954, it was the show that first brought her to Broadway from England. She turned 19 the day after her Broadway debut.

Andrews went on to star on stage in "My Fair Lady" and "Camelot."

Her screen credits include roles in 1965's "The Sound of Music" and 1982's "Victor/Victoria," for which she received Oscar nominations.
