NEW YORK (AP) -- Tom Cruise is smitten with the charms of Katie Holmes.

"I love this woman," Cruise says in an interview to air Monday on "Access Hollywood." "She's magnificent."

The couple were photographed together in Rome last month, where Cruise received a lifetime achievement award at the David di Donatello Awards, the Italian equivalent of the Oscars.

When asked why he appears to be less inhibited about showing his affection for Holmes in public than in his past relationships, Cruise tells "Access Hollywood" co-anchor Billy Bush: "I am so happy and I am not going to pretend or hide it or be shy. This woman is magnificent."

Cruise's marriages to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman ended in divorce. He dated Penelope Cruz, but the pair split last year. Holmes and actor Chris Klein recently called off their engagement, after dating for five years.

The 42-year-old Cruise says he shares many common interests and hobbies with the 26-year-old Holmes.

"We go scuba diving together," he says. "She likes all the stuff that I love to do, she's funny and smart."

He added: "I've always seen how talented she was."

Cruise stars in Steven Spielberg's "War of the Worlds" and Holmes co-stars with Christian Bale in "Batman Begins." Both films open next month.

Lohan on thinness

NEW YORK (AP) -- Recent photos show Lindsay Lohan looking startlingly thin.

The 18-year-old actress attributes her slimmer figure to a new exercise regimen.

"I'm working out. I just got a trainer," she tells People magazine in its upcoming issue.

Pilates? Yoga?

"No, none of that stuff, though I'd like to try it sometime. Just old-school working out," said Lohan, who stars in the new movie "Herbie: Fully Loaded," which opens next month.

Her screen credits also include "Freaky Friday," "Mean Girls" and the upcoming "A Prairie Home Companion," directed by Robert Altman.

She will host the season finale of NBC's "Saturday Night Live" this weekend, with Coldplay as the musical guest.

On Tuesday, Lohan told "Access Hollywood" she doesn't pay attention to reports that she's lost too much weight, but acknowledged there is a lot of pressure in Hollywood to stay slim.

"Especially when you lose a lot of weight and then people are telling you, 'You look great!' You are like, 'So ... did I look fat before?"'

Tamblyn philosophical

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Amber Tamblyn is philosophical about the cancellation of her CBS series "Joan of Arcadia."

"I loved it for what it was and it's gone and that's sad, but that's the way it goes," said the 22-year-old actress, who portrayed a teen who performed godly chores for those revealing themselves as God.

Tamblyn said she was happy to do two seasons of "a really incredible show than like eight years on a mediocre, not-so-good show."

Of her co-stars Joe Mantegna, Mary Steenburgen and Jason Ritter, the actress said: "I'm really going to miss everybody. It's like a family there. I love them, but that's life, I guess."

Tamblyn got the news before an interview with AP Radio for her new movie, "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants," due in theaters on June 1.

"People had kind of known it was on the bubble, I think, so it was kind of there, kind of like an iffy thing," she said.

CBS is filling the Friday time slot with "Ghost Whisperer," starring Jennifer Love Hewitt as a woman who talks to dead people.

"I think talking to ghosts may skew younger than talking to God," CBS Chairman Leslie Moonves said Wednesday.

Minogue to have surgery

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- Kylie Minogue, who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, was expected to have surgery this week.

"Kylie is currently undergoing tests at a first-class medical facility in Melbourne in preparation for an operation this week by one of Australia's leading surgeons," her manager, Terry Blamey, said in a statement Thursday.

"Thankfully tests so far have confirmed the earlier diagnosis that the cancer appears to be confined to the breast," Blamey said.

The 36-year-old Australian pop star said her boyfriend, French actor Olivier Martinez, is with her.

"Olivier is by my side and I have a lot of family and friends around me," Minogue said in a statement, which also carried a message of support for other breast cancer sufferers.

"I would also like to extend my best wishes to all of the other women around Australia and around the world who are dealing with the same illness," she said.

Minogue, who announced Tuesday that she has cancer, thanked her fans for their support.

"I want to reassure you that I am being well taken care of."

News crews and photographers have been huddling close to her family's home in Melbourne, the city where she rose to fame in Australian soap opera "Neighbours."
