(CNN) -- A year after President Bush was elected to a second term, he and his administration face an array of troubles, including rising energy prices, the indictment of a former top White House official and waning public support for the war in Iraq.

How can Bush turn his presidency around?

When CNN.com asked readers to send in their advice for the president, some suggested he shake up his staff. Here is a sampling of those responses, some of which have been edited:

Be proactive and clean house. President Bush came into Washington with a promise to restore honesty, integrity and family values. He may very well have these values, but it's become clear that the people around him do not.
Scott, Los Gatos, California

Mr. Bush needs to clean house at the White House. He needs to ask for the resignation of everyone who has been involved with the deception and misinformation campaign that led us into the Iraq war. This should include Mr. [Dick] Cheney. As the president has alienated the mainstream Americans, he keeps moving farther to the right to shore up support from an ever-shrinking base. The president should have nominated someone to the Supreme Court that represents the makeup of American society, not someone who can pass the litmus test for the radical right.
Mark Malaguerra, Atlanta, Georgia

In order to keep a Republican legacy into the next election, Bush should have Cheney resign and then appoint [Rudy] Giuliani from New York to finish the VP role. Then in 2008, Giuliani can run for president, with Condi Rice running as VP -- that will be an unbeatable ticket. Any other Republican combo will lose to Hillary Clinton. Bush has destroyed the Republican legacy.
Joe Smith, Madison, New Jersey

1. Fire Karl Rove.
2. Get out of Iraq.
3. Replace Mr. Cheney.
4. Apologize to the American people.
5. Protect the border.
6. Cancel the tax breaks.
7. Simplify the Medicare drug plan.
8. Get new people in White House.
9. Do something about the deficit.
10. Take that smirk off your face.
Judith A. Shaffer, Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania

Mr. President, you've surrounded yourself with fools. Clean up corruption in government: Remove Cheney immediately by way of constitutional process. Fire Rove and all other subversives. Bring credibility to your administration: Replace [Defense Secretary Donald] Rumsfeld and company with competent moderates from either party -- don't allow yourself to feel threatened by them, they are your saviors. Take a big gulp of humility and adopt a plan for an image-building withdrawal from your mindless mess in Iraq. And finally -- get Osama bin Laden -- as you promised. You owe it to all those who have died projecting your policy (and it also appears like you may be protecting him). Good Luck, sir.
Alan Kegel, Omaha, Nebraska

There are a lot of skilled and talented people working in the federal government. Listen to them. Bad intelligence is no excuse in America. Do not think that the public will support your "noble cause" when another attack happens on American soil. Drop your agenda, fire your Cabinet, quit nominating your friends, quit reciting the same rhetoric over and over, and listen to the public.
Ryan Simula, Savage, Minnesota

Einstein said that problems cannot be fixed by the very people who created them. Therefore, immediately fire Rumsfeld and Rove. Replace them with the best minds you can find regardless of political party, religious affiliation or past acts of loyalty. Reduce Cheney's power and ability to plot behind the scene to an absolute minimum. Lose the strut and smirk, and begin acting as if you really are the president of all the people. Most important, bring our men and women home from Iraq before one more is killed or maimed to cover your foolish pride.
George W. Saumweber, St. Paul, Minnesota

Admit that you and your senior Pentagon staff made mistakes. Replace the senior Pentagon staff and develop a realistic plan to bring some of the troops home.
Lee King, Salt Lake City, Utah

Bush should start listening to the American people by bringing our troops home, removing Rumsfeld, appointing moderate justices and finding Osama. As a citizen who voted for Bush in 2004, I realize it was a huge mistake.
Brent Finnell, Greenville, North Carolina
