WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Following are brief statements Thursday in reaction to the withdrawal of Harriet Miers as President Bush's nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court:

  • "The president did the right thing in withdrawing her and saving her from further embarrassment. I now hope he'll deliver on his campaign commitment to pick a judge in the mold of Thomas and Scalia." -- Phyllis Schlafly, founder of the Eagle Forum
  • "Miers' withdrawal is a warning to all Americans that extremist groups are setting President Bush's national agenda. Miers was not extremist enough for groups that seek to impose a narrow ideological agenda on all of us." -- Karen Pearl, Planned Parenthood interim president (Watch to see who possible nominee front-runners are -- 3:42)
  • "This does show the power of the radical right wing -- as Democrats call it -- normal Americans as I call it -- in this country. ... This is a great thing Harriet Miers has done. She has served her president and her country well today." -- Ann Coulter, conservative columnist
  • "Ms. Miers has a long and distinguished record of service to her country and the field of law. Unfortunately, Harriet Miers recognizes that many senators will not be satisfied until they gain access to internal White House documents protected by attorney-client privilege. Her withdrawal demonstrates her deep commitment to the fundamental constitutional principle of separation of powers." -- Brian McCabe, president of Progress for America
  • "The very potent conservative coalition -- that worked so well during the Roberts nomination process -- sadly was shattered in recent weeks. We have no doubt this powerful coalition with gather again for the president's next nominee." -- Austin Ruse, president of Culture of Life Foundation
  • "I believe the president has made a wise decision in accepting Harriet Miers' withdrawal as a nominee to the Supreme Court. In recent days I have grown increasingly concerned about her conservative credentials, and I was dismayed to learn this week about her speech in 1993, in which she sounded pro-abortion themes, and expressed so much praise for left-wing feminist leaders." -- James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family
