ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- The following is a chronology of the events surrounding the shootings Friday morning at a courthouse in Atlanta -- and the subsequent manhunt for the suspect. All times are approximate.

Friday:

9 a.m.: A defendant being retried on rape charges, 33-year-old Brian Nichols, allegedly takes a gun from a sheriff's deputy, Cynthia Ann Hall, as he is being led to court, critically injuring her before shooting and killing the judge in his trial, Rowland Barnes, and the court reporter, Julie Ann Brandau, police say.

Moments later, Nichols flees, shooting and killing another Fulton County sheriff's deputy, Sgt. Hoyt Teasley, outside the building, police say. A wide-ranging manhunt ensues.

The suspect allegedly proceeds to carjack several vehicles, including a tow truck, before arriving in an SUV and confronting a reporter from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Don O'Briant, in a parking garage adjacent to Centennial Olympic Park and CNN Center, a few blocks from the courthouse.

The reporter attempts to flee and is pistol-whipped. O'Briant said his assailant had no shirt. Police advise the public to be on the lookout for O'Briant's green Honda Accord, which was shown pulling away from a parking space on surveillance video released later in the day. Electronic signs on Atlanta-area interstate highways ask motorists to look for the Honda.

9:30 a.m.: The suspect appears on security video -- not revealed until Saturday -- at the same parking garage, descending a staircase alone and donning a blazer that apparently belongs to O'Briant, before emerging from the staircase with his hands in his pockets. Nichols took the subway to the Buckhead area, about eight miles north of the courthouse, police say Saturday.

10:40 p.m.: Apparently seeking money and a vehicle, Nichols approaches two out-of-state tourists in Buckhead, striking one in the face, police say Saturday.

11 p.m.: O'Briant's green Honda Accord is found in the downtown parking garage, leaving police with no apparent lead on the suspect's method of transportation and prompting fears that he might have taken a hostage.

Saturday:

2 a.m.: Nichols forces his way into the apartment of a woman in Gwinnett County, about 20 miles northeast of Buckhead, as she is returning from a trip to buy cigarettes, law enforcement officials say.

6:30 a.m.-7 a.m.: A construction worker finds the body of slain U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent David Wilhelm at the home Wilhelm is building in Buckhead, police say. His gun, badge and truck are missing.

9:50 a.m.: The Gwinnett County woman calls emergency dispatchers from her apartment complex's leasing office, calmly saying that Nichols is in her home and that he has weapons, police say.

11:24 a.m.: Nichols is taken into custody without incident at the complex in the Atlanta suburb of Duluth, police say. He is driven south in a police motorcade to an FBI field office before being taken to City Hall East, Atlanta's police headquarters in Midtown.

5 p.m.: Nichols is transferred from City Hall East to a federal building downtown.
