Juvenile death penalty in the United States


The following is information provided by the Death Penalty Information Center on the death penalty in the United States.

31 states with no death penalty for juveniles

EXCEPTIONS: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, S. Dakota, Tennessee, Washington, Wyoming.

12 states with no death penalty of any kind

Alaska, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin. Also: U.S. government and U.S. military.

43 states with no juveniles executed since 1976

EXCEPTIONS: Texas, South Carolina, Louisiana, Missouri (now banned), Georgia, Virginia, Oklahoma.

38 States with no juveniles on death row

EXCEPTIONS: Texas, Alabama, Louisiana, Arizona, Mississippi, North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Nevada.
