Learning Activity: Ernest Hemingway

CNN Student News -- The U.S. National Trust for Historic Preservation has placed Ernest Hemingway's Cuban home on this year's list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.

Objectives

  • Students will learn about the life and accomplishments of Ernest Hemingway.
  • Students will employ personification to write papers about historically accurate events from the perspective of Finca Vigia, Ernest Hemingway's Cuban home.
  • Procedure

Direct students to the Web sites below to learn about the life and accomplishments of Ernest Hemingway, including his stay at Finca Vígia from 1939 to 1960 and what life was like in Cuba during this time. After students complete their research, pose the following questions for class discussion:

  • What historical events influenced Hemingway's writings?
  • Why do you think that many people consider Hemingway to be the quintessential American writer?
  • Why do think that people continue to be interested in Hemingway's life and work more than 40 years after his death?
  • Following the discussion, ask students: If Hemingway's beloved Finca Vigia could talk, what stories could it tell? Challenge each student to take what he or she has learned about Hemingway and his life in Cuba and employ personification to write a paper about an historically accurate event related to Hemingway or Cuba from the perspective of Finca Vigia.
