Report: Classic 'Vettes left in the dustA collection of 36 Chevrolet Corvettes wait for artist Peter Max's big dream.May 11, 2005; Posted: 4:52 p.m. EDT (2052 GMT)
NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Thirty-six vintage Corvettes are gathering dust in a Brooklyn garage waiting for their owner to follow through on a dream he had nearly a decade ago, according to a report in New York magazine. The collection -- one Corvette for each year they were made -- belongs to Peter Max, a pop artist known for his colorful images and hippie iconography. Max, who says he's not a "car guy" and never drives, told New York magazine he got "the biggest PR dream he ever had" after he saw the cars at an auto show in 1990. "Suddenly I see my Peter Max Corvettes coming out onto a football field with cheerleaders on top. There are 60,000 people cheering, screaming. A guy in front of me is screaming to the guy behind me -- he's holding a frankfurter and mustard is dripping down his sleeve, I see this in my dream -- he's screaming right at me, looking through me, 'It's Peter Max's cars, man!" Max paid under half a million dollars for the collection of 36 Corvettes, which include models from 1953 to 1989, with the intention of painting them in his signature bright colors and offering them as limited editions. But the dream wore off and a hectic schedule caused the artist to put the project on hold, according to the magazine. The cars have been gathering dust in a garage in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, ever since, the article says. Those waiting for a Peter Max original shouldn't lose hope. The artist vows to follow through with the project, the magazine reports. For more fun on wheels, click here.
