GAZA CITY (CNN) -- An Israeli drone fired three rockets into Khan Yunis in southern Gaza early Thursday, killing two field commanders from the militant group Hamas and another person, Palestinian security forces said.

One report said the third person killed in the rocket strike shortly after midnight was an 18-year-old civilian.

Palestinian medical sources said three people were wounded, one critically.

Israeli tanks entered the city at about the same time in a raid to root out militants who regularly fire mortar rounds, Qassam rockets and anti-tank missiles at the nearby Jewish settlement of Gush Katif, an Israel Defense Forces spokeswoman said.

She said the drone's missiles targeted two groups of Palestinian militants who had been planting explosives.

The action was "part of the activity to locate the terrorist infrastructure" in Gaza, she said.

Hamas, a Palestinian Islamic fundamentalist group, is designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. State Department.

Its military wing, Izzedine al Qassam, has admitted responsibility for attacks against Israeli civilians and military.
