MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) -- The top military leader of Russia's armed forces will soon be removed from his position, officials tell CNN's Ryan Chilcote.

Gen. Anatoli Kvashnin was scheduled to travel to the United States as a guest of Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

However, that trip has been canceled, the officials said.

Kvashnin serves under Defense Minster Sergei Ivanov, who is the civilian head of Russian armed forces.

Russia's parliament recently gave Ivanov expanded control over the military, circumventing Kvashnin's authority
