(CNN) -- A coup attempt in the Democratic Republic of Congo was thwarted after rebel soldiers briefly seized control of a government radio station in Kinshasa, Foreign Minister Antoine Ghonda told CNN.

The coup leader, Maj. Eric Lenge, has been arrested.

There was no exchange of gunfire between government forces and the rebels, Ghonda said, noting that he had spoken with the country's president and vice president.

Lenge and about five other renegade soldiers proclaimed they were in charge of the country over the radio airwaves, before cutting power to the station, the minister said.

A power-sharing government was installed last year under President Joseph Kabila in an effort to bring peace to the central African nation.

In 1998, a civil war fanned by neighboring countries Rwanda and Uganda broke out in the mineral-rich country.

About 3.3 million people have been killed in the fighting in Africa's third-largest country.
