(CNN) -- A passenger train and a freight train collided at Amsterdam's Central Station, injuring several people and trapping many in damaged rail cars, a spokesman for the Amsterdam police said.

The accident took place Friday about 5:10 p.m. (12:10 p.m. ET), said spokesman Ron Moes, and emergency personnel were on the scene trying to free the trapped passengers.

"It looks serious," he said. "We don't know yet whether there are a lot of people on the train at this time."

Moes said the scene was "very busy and we are trying to find out exactly what is going on."

A Reuters journalist on the scene said the front carriage of one of the trains was resting on top of the locomotive of the other.

A spokesman for the Dutch Railways, which operates the train system in the Netherlands, told Reuters that the train carrying the passengers was heading to the western city of Haarlem.

Train traffic to and from the Dutch capital has been suspended, the news agency reported.
