PRAGUE, Czech Republic (CNN) -- The Czech Republic's foreign minister has been airlifted to a trauma hospital in Brno after being serious injured in a car accident.
Cyril Svoboda's doctor in Vyscov, where the accident took place, told the Czech news agency CTK on Friday that Svoboda's injuries involved cervical vertebrae, but that his spinal cord was unaffected.
Dr. Jiri Kubacak said he was in stable condition and would probably not require surgery.
Svoboda, 47, was returning from northern Moravia when the accident took place late on Thursday night. Vyscov police said he was accompanied by a driver and a bodyguard, who rode in the front seat of the Audi while the minister slept in the back.
The police said the driver, who was not drunk, apparently failed to slow sufficiently in a construction zone and the car left the road at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, hitting a concrete water tank and then sliding down an embankment.
The car, the police said, was wrecked.
Svoboda's schedule for the next two weeks, including trips to Jordan, Qatar and Kuwait, have been canceled, and he will miss some key votes for his party in the Czech parliament.
