The accident, which police called serious by Finnish standards, happened around 2:00 a.m. (0000 GMT) Tuesday near the town of Aanekoski, some 300 km (200 miles) north of the capital Helsinki.

"I cannot say what the cause of the accident was yet, but I can say that the road in the area was slippery and icy," an Aanekoski police official said.

He said no information was immediately available on the victims, but said the bus was on its way from Helsinki to northern Lapland for a skiing trip.

He said the injured were taken to hospital in the nearby town of Jyvaskyla. The driver of the truck was not seriously injured in the crash.
