U.N. Cyprus talks: One last try
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) -- A third day of talks on an elusive deal to reunite Cyprus before its May 1 entry into the European Union adjourned early on Friday without agreement, and negotiators said they would return later in the day for one last try.
Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said both sides would be asked when they returned to U.N. headquarters to sign a statement to be drafted by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, setting out ground rules for later talks in Cyprus on the line-by-line details of a reunification plan.
"The Greek Cypriot side has objections and they are trying to get over it," Denktash said.
Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos, the leader of the Greek Cypriot delegation at the marathon U.N.-backed talks, said only, "Wait until tomorrow" as he left the building nearly 12 hours after arriving.
Diplomats said the two sides appeared deadlocked over whether to include EU experts in later negotiations, as sought by the Greek Cypriot side.
They were also struggling to come up with a mutually acceptable role for U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan in resolving their differences, the diplomats said.
