Prodi parcel case: Man arrested
ROME, Italy (Reuters) -- Italian police said on Tuesday they had arrested a man suspected of sending a threatening package to European Commission president Romano Prodi last month.
Police on the island of Sardinia said the 25-year-old was suspected of having sent Prodi a package with spent shotgun shells and fireworks.
The package was posted from Cagliari and arrived at Prodi's home in Bologna on January 12. It caused no damage or injuries.
It was not clear if the man was suspected of having any link to a parcel bomb that exploded when Prodi opened it on December 27. That bomb was posted in Bologna.
Cagliari, Sardinia's capital, has for decades been home to a low-level insurrectionist movement opposed to rule from Rome.
The arrested man was charged with subversion and also suspected of connection with a string of minor bombings by anarchists in the Cagliari area, police said.
A series of parcel bombs were sent to EU officials in December and January. Nearly all were posted in Bologna and investigators suspect they were sent by anarchists.
