MOSCOW, Russia (Reuters) -- Chechen rebels, armed with automatic weapons and grenades, broke into the house of a bodyguard of pro-Moscow Chechen President Akhmad Kadyrov and killed five of his security service officers.

Interfax news agency quoted a police source as saying on Sunday that one of the attackers had been killed and four wounded in the shooting in the village of Alleroi in the southeast of Chechnya.

Alleroi is the hometown of Aslan Maskhadov, a separatist Chechen leader who was president of a de facto independent Chechnya from 1996 to 1999.

Interfax said local authorities, including Kadyrov's security service, carried out a special operation in Alleroi at the start of the week and received information on the whereabouts of the head of Maskhadov's security service.

Special operations, conducted periodically by Russian troops, involve house to house searches and detention of young men. They are deeply resented by many Chechens.

Russia has been waging a war against Chechen separatists since 1994 with Moscow refusing talks with any of the separatists and armed rebels rejecting Kremlin peace plans.
