NI arrests in global terror probe
LONDON (CNN) -- A man and a woman arrested in Belfast last week under an international terrorism investigation will remain in police custody for another three days after a judge granted a 72-hour extension to hold them for further questioning, police said last Saturday.
The arrests took place Friday, a spokesman for the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said.
"Two people have been arrested by PSNI in Belfast under terrorist legislation," the spokesman said. "The man and the woman are foreign nationals and are being questioned about serious crimes as part of an international investigation."
The woman worked as a nurse at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, hospital officials confirmed, but no further information was divulged about her, and no information was made public about the man.
The suspects were arrested in west Belfast, the heartland of the city's Republican constituency, but police do not suspect the pair were connected with the Irish Republican Army or other groups battling for North Ireland's separation from Britain.
Under anti-terrorism legislation, police cannot hold a suspect without arrest for longer than 48 hours without a 72-hour extension.
