KATHMANDU, Nepal (CNN) -- At least 21 people have been killed in a Maoist attack on a telecommunications station in Nepal, state run radio has reported.

Hundreds of Maoist rebels stormed the telephone tower in Bhojpur on Tuesday night in the most deadly attack since the collapse of peace talks in August.

"At least 21 security personnel were killed at Bhojpur when they clashed with a group of Maoist rebels Tuesday night," according to Wednesday's Radio Nepal report.

One rebel also died in the deadly night-long battle.

A Nepalese army official acknowledged the incident at Bhojpur, but said details were still pending.

The rebels have been fighting for a communist republic in Nepal since 1996. The insurgency has claimed more than 9,000 lives.

Guerrillas walked out of peace talks after the government refused to compromise on the role of the monarchy.

Officials say about 1,700 people, most of them rebels, have been killed since August, Reuters reports.

-- Journalist Akhilesh Upadhyay contributed to this report.
