TOKYO, Japan (CNN) -- Two Japanese military helicopters have collided during a training mission and crashed into a sparsely populated rural area in central Japan, according to the Ministry of Self-Defense.
The AH-1S anti-tank helicopters carred two people each and their fate was not immediately known.
The accident happened in Japan's Mie Perfecture at 10:05 a.m. (0105 GMT) on Monday, according to the ministry.
The helicopters were part of Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force and according to local media reports, the helicopters had been carrying two teachers and two students each from Akeno flight school, who were conducting training exercises.
