SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir (CNN) -- A senior police official was gunned down Mondayoutside a mosque in central Srinagar, following morning prayers, police said.
One person was also wounded.
Eyewitnesses said Deputy Inspector General Mohammad Amin Bhatt had just walked out of a mosque after offering special prayers on the Muslim festival of Eid, when an unidentified number of assailants opened fire on him.
Police officials said he was rushed to the hospital, but doctors were unable to revive him. Police suspect Kashmiri separatists, but no militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
According to Mangat Ram Sharma, the Deputy Chief Minister of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, the shootings were carried out by "enemies of peace in Kashmir."
