(CNN) -- Dominica Prime Minister Pierre Charles died Tuesday evening of a heart attack, government and hospital sources said.
"Charles passed away at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday 6, Jan 2004," according to a government Web site.
Charles, 49, was leaving a meeting when he complained of not feeling well and collapsed. He was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital in Roseau, where he was pronounced dead.
Charles had a history of heart problems.
Dominica is located in the eastern Caribbean Sea, between Guadeloupe and Martinique.
