(CNN) -- Former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide left the Central African Republic early Monday, presumably for Jamaica.
Aristide fled to the Central African Republic after resigning and leaving his turbulent country February 29 in the face of an advancing rebel insurgency. He flew out from Bangui's international airport with several aides.
"Mr. Aristide has expressed a wish to return temporarily to the Caribbean with his wife and to be reunited with their two young children who are currently in the United States," says a statement on Jamaican Prime Minister P.J. Patterson's Web site.
"At his request, arrangements are being made for his travel and accommodation in Jamaica."
"His stay in Jamaica is not expected to be in excess of eight to 10 weeks," the statement said. Patterson's statement says Aristide is not seeking political asylum in Jamaica, but will seek permanent residence outside the Caribbean region.
Aristide has said he was abducted by the United States and forced to leave Haiti, a charge Washington has vehemently denied.
