(AP) -- Snow fell across the Northeast and central Plains early Thursday, while a strong arctic air mass produced frigid conditions in the northern Plains.

A low pressure system was expected to produce 1 to 2 inches of snowfall across the Northeast, while lake effect snow was expected to bring accumulations of 3 to 6 inches to northeastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and western New York.

In the central United States, a strong Arctic air mass was forecast to filter into the northern Plains and Upper Midwest, bringing winds of 20 to 40 mph and wind chills of 10 to 40 degrees below zero.

In the West, a low pressure system was expected to bring rain showers, along with snow, across higher elevations over Arizona, southern California and western New Mexico. Fog was to continue affecting valleys from the Rockies to the Pacific, leaving visibility near a quarter-mile at times.

Elsewhere, high pressure was expected to produce partly cloudy skies and dry conditions across the Tennessee Valley, Carolinas, Deep South and Florida.

High temperatures on Thursday will be in the teens over the Great Lakes; teens and 20s in the northern Plains; 20s in the Northeast; 30s in the mid-Atlantic; 40s in the central Plains, Rockies and Pacific Northwest; 50s across the Deep South and Southeast; 50s and 60s in California and the Desert Southwest; and 70s over southern Florida.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of minus-19 in Watertown, New York, to a midday high of 75 in Los Alamitos, California
