(CNN) -- Four U.S. Marines were killed Thursday night when the Marine helicopter they were riding in crashed in Camp Pendleton in California, a military spokesman said.
The UH-1 Huey crashed around 7 p.m. (10 p.m. ET) in the northwest corner of the base, said Maj. T.V. Johnson of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force. Three of the Marines died in the crash. A fourth died after being taken to a civilian hospital near Mission Viejo.
Investigators are looking into whether the helicopter hit power lines, said Capt. Shawn Turner, a Marine Corps spokesman in Washington.
Camp Pendleton is about 35 miles north of downtown San Diego.
