(CNN) -- A 12-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday in Carrollton, Georgia, and charged in the killing of an 8-year-old girl whose body was found in a wooded area, authorities said.

Lt. Shane Taylor of the Carroll County Sheriff's Department said preliminary autopsy results show that Amy Michelle Yates was strangled.

He also said the boy and Yates knew each other.

The boy was charged with murder, and is being moved to a regional juvenile center in Paulding County, Taylor said.

It was not immediately known if authorities would seek to have the boy tried as an adult.

The girl disappeared Monday around 5:30 p.m. when she left her home on her bike to go to a friend's home in the same trailer park.

"She never showed up," Taylor said.

Her bike was found, but there was no sign of Yates. Her family contacted authorities, and at about 10:15 p.m. Monday, the girl's body was found in woods about 100 feet from the trailer park, Taylor said.

Authorities canvassed the 40-home trailer park to interview witnesses. Taylor would not say what led them to the 12-year-old boy, whose name is not being released.

Asked if the boy had confessed, Taylor said, "He has admitted to some involvement in it."

Carrollton is 40 miles west of Atlanta.
