(CNN) -- A Navy F/A-18C fighter jet crashed Friday while taking off from Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina, an airport spokeswoman said.

The pilot, who ejected, was "relatively unharmed" and was taken to Wake Medical Center in Raleigh for observation, airport spokeswoman Teresa Damiano said.

The jet was based at Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and was assigned to a routine training mission, a Navy spokesman said.

Aircraft wreckage sitting at the end of a runway burned for 45 minutes after the crash, until firefighters extinguished the flames.

Aircraft continued to take off and land on another runway, though a number of flights were delayed, Damiano said.
