Police: 13-year-old patient assaulted in hospital
NEW YORK (CNN) -- A 13-year-old girl was taken from her room at Bellevue Hospital on Friday morning and sexually assaulted by an unidentified man, police said.
The victim was led into a conference room at approximately 7:15 a.m., where she was assaulted, they said.
The girl had been admitted to the hospital for eye surgery and remains hospitalized after the attack, which left her with injures to her face and spine, according to a report on television station NY1's Web site.
The man is of average height with medium brown hair, and wore a black leather jacket with a belt, New York Police Department Detective Gary Cillo said.
"The matter is under investigation by the Health and Hospital Corporation of New York City and the NYPD", said Peter Schectman, the hospital administrator on duty.
The NYPD has asked that anyone with information about the assault contact authorities.
In January 1989, a pregnant doctor was killed by a homeless man at Bellevue Hospital.
According to Court TV, Steven Smith, who had a history of psychiatric problems, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for killing Dr. Kathryn Hinnant Johnson.
