(CNN) -- Police restricted access to the Madison, New Jersey, campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University after a student was shot and wounded during an "escalating confrontation" at a student dance, university officials said Sunday.

The student, hospitalized with an abdominal wound, was in serious condition at Morristown Memorial Hospital, but his wound was not considered life-threatening, Fairleigh Dickinson President J. Michael Adams said in a statement issued Sunday.

Morris County Prosecutor Michael Rubbinaccio told reporters three people were stabbed and three others suffered other injuries, he said. None was believed to be life-threatening.

"A disagreement involving students from our College at Florham and Metropolitan Campus and guests attending an Association of Black Collegians dance at Florham on Saturday evening resulted in an escalating confrontation," Adams said in his statement.

"A number of individuals were injured. One Metropolitan Campus student received a gunshot wound."

Adams said campus security officers called in Florham Park police to restore order. Police would allow only those with school business to enter the campus Sunday.

"The university is very concerned by this disturbance and any injury to students," Adams said. "We will reevaluate the security procedures for this type of event and make every effort to assure that it will not happen again."

Fairleigh Dickinson is the largest private university in New Jersey, according to the school's Web site. It has 3,500 graduate and undergraduate students.

Four men were taken to Morristown Memorial hospital, and one of them was treated and released, according to a spokesperson, who declined to comment on other injuries.

A spokeswoman for St. Barnabas Hospital said two Fairleigh Dickinson students were taken to its emergency room overnight, both treated and released.
